The Most Popular Candy In Mexico
Mexican kids are lucky in that they have a large range of candies to choose from both sweet and spicy. Mexican candy is delicious but a lot of it is quite different from American candy because it is spicy! Mexicans like to add chili to a lot of their food and candy is no exception. You can also get chewing gum, Mexican milk candy, chocolate candies, and gummy candies, Mexican candy recipes, which cater to every taste and type of sweet tooth. The Mexicans are not scared of spiciness. Perhaps their motto is, if you can eat it, put some chili in it! If you want to have a go at making your own, there are plenty of recipes for traditional Mexican candy online.
Something quite new in Mexico, which is popular right now, is called Salsaghetti. This is a packet of watermelon straws that resemble pasta. They are spicy and you also get a pouring sauce, which is called gusano tamarind. Tamarind is an Asian fruit which is also widely grown in Mexico and gusano means worm! A lot of Mexican candy contains tamarind. Salsaghetti looks a lot like a meal but you do not get candy meatballs with it.
Popsicles in Mexico are different to what you might find in other places. A lot of Mexican popsicles are spicy hot, even jalapeo hot. American kids might like cinnamon candies but Mexican kids like chili powder on the outside of their candies. The inside can be different flavors and some examples include chili, mango, watermelon, cherry, strawberry, and pineapple.
Since Mexico is responsible for introducing the joys of chocolate to the world, thanks to the Aztecs, you might assume that present day Mexicans enjoy chocolate candies. Actually, they do not consume that much compared to other countries. What they prefer is to use chocolate as an ingredient in their drinks or in traditional Mexican recipes such as mole poblano, which is a nut, chili, onion, garlic and chocolate sauce. Have a look for some mole poblano recipes and try making your own. You might find someone enjoying a chocolate patty candy, which perhaps also contains sugar, almonds, and cinnamon, but the Mexicans are not big eaters of chocolate.
A popular candy throughout Mexico is known as Dulce de leche. It means, “Milk candy.” Milk-based syrup is similar to caramel by how it looks and tastes. It can be

as a sauce, or as a caramel-like candy. It is simple to make, simply by boiling milk and sugar. Besides being in candy, it is also used in cakes, cookies, and ice cream. People even spread it on toast.
It is even well liked outside Mexico. Starbucks serve a dulce de leche flavored latte and you can get dulce de leche ice cream throughout America’s southwest states.
You can buy Mexican candies from local Mexican grocery stores or even online. If you do not like to mix your chili with your sweet foods, you can also choose from caramel candies or chocolate candies. There are many types of Mexican candy to choose from so have a look today!

You can make candies just like grandma and your mom used to make. These recipes are from old family recipe files. Go back in time with homemade Penuche, a candy made with brown sugar. Or try Whipping Cream Candy, which is totally different than the Penuche. This candy is made with whipping cream and white corn syrup. And who doesn’t love a good homemade toffee? Make up a batch of candy soon!
PENUCHE
4 1/2 cups brown sugar
1 cup evaporated milk
1/4 lb butter or margarine
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups chopped nut meats
Cook brown sugar, milk, butter or margarine, and salt, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Cook at medium heat to the soft ball stage. Remove from the heat; cool. Add vanilla and nut meats. Beat till thick. Pour into a buttered pan and when cool, cut into squares.
Makes 3 pounds.
WHIPPING CREAM CANDY
2 1/2 cups whipping cream
4 cups sugar
3/4 cup white corn syrup
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup chopped nuts
Boil cream, sugar, and syrup to the soft ball stage. Remove from heat and let set until cooled. Add vanilla and nuts. Beat hard until creamy. Pour into a buttered 13×9x2-inch pan. Cut into small squares after candy is completely cooled.
Melinda’s Chocolate Toffee
1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 pkg (6-oz) semi-sweet chocolate chips
Very lightly butter the bottom of an 8-inch square pan. Spread the nuts in the bottom of the pan. In a 2-quart saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar; bring to a boil. Boil the mixture for 7 minutes, stirring constantly. Pour the hot mixture over the nuts immediately. Allow to stand for a just a few minutes. Sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the candy. Cover the pan with a cutting board to keep the heat in. When chips are soft, spread evenly. Store in the refrigerator. Break into pieces to serve.
